Miami Art Museum commissions Cortada
to create mural with Little Havana youth

The Miami-Dade Empowerment Zone awarded Miami Art Museum a $32,000 grant for the MAM in the neighborhood program.  The program, which takes place from June through August 2001, is a mural project that reaches out to underserved teens identified by the East Little Havana assembly of the Miami-Dade Empowerment Zone.

Led by artist Xavier Cortada, the students will design and paint a mural at 555 NW South River Drive.  The students will also participate in hands-on art workshops with artists and education professionals, learn about public art, and participate in tours and interactive workshops at several South Florida cultural institutions.

The completed mural will be unveiled at noon on August 19, 2001.
