MEDIA ADVISORY

MIAMI TO HOST ONE-OF-A-KIND MURAL TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR TWEENS

CDC Teams Up with Accomplished Miami Muralist and Area Youth to Design and Produce Mural

WHAT:                         The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s VERB.™ It’s what you do. campaign is PAINTING Miami with a large-scale mural.  The mural will highlight Miami’s local flavor by depicting its beautiful sunny weather, numerous ocean activities and popular bike trails.  In addition, it will portray Miami area youth sharing and performing multiple VERBs, while conveying a message of the importance of finding one’s own VERB.  It will also reflect various socioeconomic and multicultural VERBs popular to Miami youth — inspiring them to get active and find their VERB.

WHO:                           Accomplished Miami muralist Xavier Cortada will design and produce a vibrant mural to gear up tweens to begin VERBing.  Miami area youth will have the unique opportunity to explore their artistic talents by painting the mural themselves, along with Cortada, prior to its unveiling.

WHY:                           The VERB campaign was developed to encourage youth to get active.  Research shows that children who are engaged in physical activities experience greater self-esteem, confidence and discipline, school achievement, social connectedness and positive family relationships than their sedentary peers.
